Who so keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles- Proverbs 21:23
Often times people believe it is more important to say what they feel and disregard all possible consequences. We hear things like I just have to get this off my chest, or I can’t hold this in, if it hurt them it just hurt them. It is a worldly approach to communicating with humanity. Families are torn apart as husbands and wives speak harmful words that they are painfully printed in the heart of their spouse. It is almost like we as believers do not believe that what and how we speak matters. The bible says that the power of death and life is in tongue.
In the book of Proverbs we read many important words of wisdom that we attempt to follow. However this proverb is perhaps as wise as any we will encounter. Whoso, suggest anyone who will take it upon themselves to keep their mouth and their tongue. The word keep here is the same word we use when we say the Lord is keeping me. It suggest one has authority, responsibility and the capability to keep us safe, to provide for us and to make sure we don’t fall into dangerous situation. While believers have come to expect this from God, this verse suggest that God also expects us to keep our mouth and our tongue the same way.
There are many times when it is not about saying nothing, but keeping what you say within the will of God. Keep our comments to our friends and families in the context of Godly communication. Speak the truth in love, care more about who you talking to than what you are saying. "Know and believe that what and how we speak does matter!"
